Portrait of a DNA Sequence, 1998
stainless steel and dichronic mirror

This interpretive portrait of a particular DNA sequence of 201 base pairs was created with the assistance of team of department microbiologists, geneticists and crystallographers. The dichroic mirrors reflect both overhead sunlight and ambient light, creating a faintly colored atmosphere throughout the stairwell. The ephemeral nature of the surface of the mirror is analogous to the ephemeral nature of DNA itself.
